April Is National Autism Awareness Month

Good morning everyone!  It's Julie here with a post that is near and dear to my heart.  April is National Autism Awareness Month and here at The Scrappy Tree, we'd like to present you with a number of websites to give you information on this disorder.

Autism is typically characterized as a difficulty in social interaction, verbal and non verbal communication and quite often, repetitive behaviors.  (Source: Autism Speaks).  The statistics are alarming:  1 in 88 children have autism!  1 in 54 boys are affected.  Those numbers are scary.

My son was diagnosed on the Autism spectrum close to 10 years ago.  He is a very loving boy that I treasure each day.  It seems like Autism is so common now that most people know someone on the Autism spectrum.  The diagnosis of Autism can be a scary one for a family, but there are so many resources and even support groups available for families and kids suffering from Autism.

The following sites are wonderful sites to further explain what Autism is, as well as provide hope and support to those who know a child on the Spectrum.

www.autismspeaks.org (excellent resource)
www.autismsciencefoundation.org
www.autism-society.org

Each one of these sites also has a spot for anyone to donate to the cause and help researh.

Thank you for stopping by today.

Thanks for posting this Jules, autism is certainly growing in the public awareness thankfully, and it's a great cause to donate to :)
